I’m still winning.

Today I found out that one of my co-workers is forwarding my blog posts to management. While it was pointed out to me that things are looking much better than I was remembering last night, the fact that I have such co-workers is kind of disheartening. It’s not a surprise, just disheartening.

I’m not sure why anyone would care about what I say, and I was surprised that anyone even reads this drivel. (It’s practice for me, to keep up my writing chops.) But it has now been pointed out to me by friends that in this day and age I’m not allowed to have any public opinions, at least not about work. That’s even though I’m quite simple in my opinions. I don’t try to mislead anyone and it’s pretty obvious how I’m feeling whether I write it down or not. It’s just in this case, people who are assuming I’m fat, dumb, and happy realize that I’m only two of the three.

It should also be obvious that I exaggerate things. I don’t usually name names, and even when I do people can be caricatures of the way they really are. I mean, how much fun would it be if I listed every little mundane detail about a person? It’s much better to point out interesting characteristics and anomalies. I just hope that anyone in a position of power above me possesses a sense of humor. In any case, I will now try to quit talking about work.

I usually don’t comment on comments left on my blog, but I should point out that the theme of my blog is not wowees me. It’s WOE IS ME. I am aware that I am a bit of a sad sack and it does not need to be pointed out to me by strangers. However, I find that I must correct malapropisms. I hope this has helped to increase the literacy on the web.

  1. I confess that I’m stunned. I stumbled onto your site, then saw the complaint about coding for Windows, how it’s such a pain in comparison to Linux, and thought “He’s confusing ‘familiarity’ with ‘simplicity’.”

I then started reading backward. I think your employer is not too difficult to guess from your posts.

You bought a MacBookPro (was that right?), then paid for a ‘genius’ service to help you with the computer. Huh? Ummm, if you code for a living, on any platform, you’re an odd one to me: I’ve never met anyone capable in this field (I’m in the same field, and it seems like we’re not far apart in age either) who’d ever consider paying for Tier 1 support from anyone. Are you good at your job? Or are you just doing it because it seems like changing careers is something for someone 20 years younger? [By the way; I’ve lived in the Bay Area – and San Francisco is a very special town. Why you don’t pick up and move, I have no idea. No, the pay isn’t proportional, but it IS higher. You’ll get less for your money, but if you really wanted cheap cost-of-living, you’d move to North Dakota.]

In the most recent post, you say that people assume that you’re fat, dumb, and happy – but only two of those are true. By your own admissions, you’re not a happy man. If the remaining two are intended as dry humor, get some Gatorade – you’re so dehydrated that you’re hallucinating. [Irk … was ‘winning’ another attempt at clever substitution for ‘whining’? See above, and please stop attempting to be clever.]

Yeesh. I intended to post a critique about your ‘Windows Torture’. Now, I just want to suggest antidepressants. (Or are they covered deeper in the blog?)

Damn, I’m not sure if I feel sympathy for you or not. You seem to enjoy wallowing in misery. I’m not even sure if I should wish you luck or curse you.

  2. time to stop your blog. you’ve started attracting people that are more lame than you are 🙂

LEAVE YOUR DAMN JOB, GET LAID, and, for christs sake, GO ON VACATION ALREADY!!!!!

    Love you, really XOXO

  3. Wow – it looks like more than just Megacorp management doesn’t get your blog.

I hope you have a great trip.

    PS – AY is free.

  4. Yeesh, spelling seems to be another issue too, *cough*Sam*–

Megan, in the post above, may be right, though I enjoy reading your blog daily–I too happened on your blog but your posts are easy to relate to and frankly, humorous. BTW, was the Gatorade comment an attempt to be clever? Someone needs to follow his own advice *cough*Greg*

Maybe you just need to shut out the comments…including mine.

Hope everyone makes a better day–

  5. Dude, you know I use your blog to keep abreast of what you’re up to, because EMAILING or CALLING is sooo much effort, but I’m with Megan. BTW, do you know who the rat-fink-m*fer coworker is (hey, RFMFC, this is MY opinion and does not necessarily reflect the views or policies of htodd), or did you just find out that *someone* was doing this through management?

  6. Wow, controversy and excitement.

You have never named names about work and you have never named work AND have you ever even given a location. As someone with some HR experience, you did not break any confidentiality; you are fine. Don’t worry.

Another good reason to move on to another employer. I mean, good grief, who has the bandwidth to do all that tattling? Pathetic. I guess they figure if they throw you under the bus they will still have a job?

And who cares if you complain? It is your space to do as you want. I write boring knitting posts. Blogging/journaling is a great low-consequence writing exercise. If you ever need the education stats to back this up, let me know.

Just do whatever you want. You are fine and doing well.

  7. I LOVE your Blog and so does Jr. Slabs. It makes me laugh out loud. You are hilarious. WTF is wrong with people!
