UPS and downs [updated twice].

I’ve been buying a lot of weird crap on the intarwebs (ham radio crap, obviously) and I’ve spent a lot of time using “Delivery Status” on my iPhone to track the packages. I had a bunch of antenna stuff coming on Friday but I got an interesting message email from UPS that said,

… delivery of the following shipment has been rescheduled

Exception Reason: TRAIN DERAILMENT

That’s kind of exciting in a bad way. Delivery Status even reports the location of the train derailment to be Wolf Point, MT, which means I can use the intarwebs to get news. The AP reports:

Train Hits Semi On Montana Hi-Line
Wednesday, January 18th 2012
HELENA, Mont. (AP) — BNSF Railway says a freight train with its whistle blowing derailed in northeastern Montana after colliding with a semitrailer that had pulled across tracks between Bainville and Culbertson.

BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas says the semi driver was airlifted from the scene after the collision shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Roosevelt County officials weren’t immediately available for comment.

Melonas says there were no serious injuries among the train’s crew.

Ten of the train’s 40 cars carrying everything from diapers to washers derailed along with four locomotives, including two that were on their sides. Melonas says about 500 gallons of diesel fuel spilled, but the spill was contained and wasn’t threatening waterways.

At least 13 trains have been rerouted while the track is repaired. The track could reopen as early as Wednesday.

I hate to be mercenary about this but I think this may be one of those times that I have to be present when the shipment arrives and check to see that it’s not all beat up. I think the only thing I can do is reject the shipment when the guy arrives with it. I don’t think this had anything to do with the snow.

Speaking of snow, there were people sledding at midnight, and sledding means lots of screaming, “Whee,” and using other nonsensical interjections that woke me up repeatedly. When I got up at 6AM there was still a lot of snow, but it was raining cats and dogs. I drove to the slush to work, and got there at the usual time but was unusually tired. I hope we’re done with that foolishness.

[UPDATE] For all those people coming here looking for UPS info, my package is back on schedule to be delivered today, 1/20. That means I have to take a day off of work to wait for it, and reject it if it looks damaged. At least that’s how I understand how shipping works.

[Second UPDATE] I got one of my two packages delivered today and it was fine. True to MFJ form, though, (the ham radio manufacturer also known as “More Effing Junk”) it came without a manual. Oh, and I’m deleting the ruder comments because it’s my blog and I do whatever I feel like.

  1. Well, I too had a package aboard that train… Just my luck!! A very expensive Euro car parts order too… Hope everyone is alright!

  2. Same here—what part of the country you guys in? Trying to figure out what hub it was heading to and where all it services?? I’m in northwest Idaho….

  3. Same here. I’m in Seattle as well and am expecting an Artisan-made tile from Detroit. Hope it’s not broken!

  4. Me too…two orders on that train. Are the orders still coming OR should we write them off assuming we’re not getting them? Hopefully everyone involved is ok….

  5. I have a package of brass on this train wreck and I hope it is not lost among the ruins.
I am in Oregon watching the rain pour down.

  6. Had a Graphics Card for my computer on this train….Never thought I would see a “Train Derailment” notice on UPS…I’m near Seattle as well

  7. Me, too. Shipment coming from Virginia and I’m in Ritzville. UPS is not being particularly helpful, claiming they don’t know what’s going on at the derailment site but that maybe I should re-order. Oh, well . . .

  8. I am also stuck in this situation. They said my package was in Richmond BC now it is listed as being on this train. What a load of ….. A lot of sighing going on here.

  9. damn ups i had an awesome sword on that train you think they could be a little more helpful

    vancouver, WA

  10. Yup, I just now got the notice. I ordered and needed new gear for a snowmobiling trip to Wapato for the next 7 days. Guess I’ll be damp and bitchy now, swell!

    Marysville, WA

  11. I’m awaiting an order from Cabela’s that is on this train too, i’m in Oregon. We’ve gotten more rain in the last 48 hours then we have all year I think… Pretty impressive.

  12. I had shipped a whites spectra v3i metal detector that im told was missing it was shipped from michigan to oregon

  13. Seems like a lot of us have the same problem. This site came up after I Googled the derailment location. I was worried about a delay due to our snow here in Seattle, but I never expected this.

  14. I have two packages were on this train.. Talked to a friend who is a driver who works for UPS he says it can take up to weeks to get it straighten out 🙁 just outside of Seattle..

  15. We were expecting hot tub parts for our cedar barrel hot tub from Winnipeg, Manitoba, CA. All was on schedule until this unusual ‘derailment’ notice. Thought delivery might be delayed due to WA state foul weather, but not this. At least it’s not life or death, and hope our goods make it one day or another. And hope all workers on the train are safe!

  16. I too had a package aboard this train. I am in a suburb of Seattle and my package was coming from Va. Seeing “Train Derailment” really shocked me! I am also hoping that all involved are alright. I want my stuff though!!!!!

  17. This is the reply I got from UPS. “We are still in the process of identifying all of the affected packages. Customers with packages that were damaged in the derailment will be contacted by UPS within the next several days. Packages that were not damaged will begin to see movement in the tracking system as soon as conditions allow. I encourage you to continue tracking this shipment online to obtain the current status.”
Why does it take several days? Why can’t they get more people down there sorting through it…?

  18. I’m also in Portland, and I was expecting a package that was on that Train to be delivered today. Ironically, I just checked the tracking info and it says that my package is out for delivery today!

Even more ironically, I’m also an Amateur Radio Operator. Although, my package doesn’t contain Radio gear..

If you haven’t done so yet, you might want to check your tracking info again..

  19. Guess I will get in line, I too am waiting for a Lens I purchased for my camera gear. Nice to hear that others have gotten notice that there package will be ddelivered today. My tracking number says still Exception. I am north of Seattle.

  20. My tracking updates to “Arrival Scan” and then “Out For Delivery, Tualatin, OR, United States”. is it mean that my package ok?

  21. Just checked on my package and it still says Exception, Train derailment. I saw a picture of boxes laying on the ground with the container split open. My luck is that my package was in that container.

  22. Yep – same here have apackage on that Train that Staples had mis-ordered inthe 1st place. Oh well, such is life. I even went on the live chat & said please, you have to have more info. Finaly got the guy on the other side to say – I am Sorry!

  23. I had some sports equipment on the train sent by UPS shipping to Lynnwood, WA. I just received notice it was delayed due to derailment. LOL…… pretty funny if you ask me. At least it wasnt a plane crash. As far as the main poster, chill out. Taking days off of work to wait for a package. You crazy woman, you crazy!

  24. Waiting for shipment to Seattle, too, and I came across this blog. This package is actually time critical for business, too, and I had to order another package with overnight delivery. I guess lesson learned is to order via Express in the first place (but of course accident can happen on ground or on air).

I’m actually surprised that UPS uses freight trains to move its ground packages. I thought it just uses trucks to move ground packages.

I hope the driver is OK.

  25. Driver is fine, here is from Montana paper:
“Driver of semi recovering after hit by train

    TRAIN HITS SEMI
(Information in the following story is from: Billings Gazette, http://www.billingsgazette.com)
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — The Montana Highway Patrol says the driver of a semi-trailer that was struck by a freight train in northeastern Montana is recovering at a Billings hospital.
Trooper Ross Tuggle told The Billings Gazette (http://bit.ly/yHO62s) it appeared 56-year-old Patrick Francis Parker of Sidney either didn’t see the train or thought he could beat it across the track at a crossing between Culbertson and Bainville on Tuesday afternoon.
Tuggle says the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train crew says it looked like the driver was going to slow down, and then the truck pulled in front of the westbound train. BNSF officials say the train crew activated the emergency brakes, but could not stop in time.
Parker suffered broken ribs and teeth during the collision, but Tuggle says he is expected to go home on Friday the 20th.”

  26. I can’t believe it – it just happened AGAIN. New phones for me and a coworker are apparently on that train.

  27. My shipment has also been derailed at this exact location. What the fuck is happening at Wolfe Point? This is ridiculous

  28. I ordered a new tv and the day before its supposed to get here this happens its seems suspicious that this happened at the same location exactly 6 months later. I dislike ups I called them to see what was happening and they had no answer for me. They couldn’t even tell me where my package was. I’m so irate this stuff always happens to me when I get packages via ups.

  29. So much for thinking I got a good deal on the “free shipping and handling”. We (my teenage daughter) have been waiting for acne medication! Does UPS not understand the issues associated with zits….? OMG. And… I did not receive any notification yet- just happened to check the package status.

  30. I’m not going to worry to much about my items on the train but instead hope, wish and/or pray that everyone involved in this accident is alright…….

  31. I’m here in Portland waiting for a jacket for my wife that is to replace another jacket ordered a month and a half ago, that was “unavailable” on back order. This one shipped on time, but this whole incedent seems to be a trainwreck! I think it’s another plot from the Democrats just to mess with an independant voter! (Gotta blame it on someome)

  32. Well, I’m not sure which train was carrying my package to my son up at Ft. Lewis, but I’ll tell him to look it over carefully and not accept it if it’s banged up. Birthday present supposed to arrive in Spanaway, Washington today. I don’t know if I packed a Solid spruce top/Mahagony side and back Acoustic guitar well enough to survive a train wreck. I hope the truck driver makes it okay. Bad business all around!

  33. I was contacted by 2 clients this morning. WHAT ARE the odds that 2 of my Sybian machines are on a train that derails in MT?? I had only insured one of them partially.. So who has to pay for all that damage (hoping the driver is ok of course)

  34. Some of you have had a reschedule date? My shipment to Oregon simply lists as “Exception.” What are you hearing about new expected delivery dates?

  35. Seems it happened again, but I don’t understand why you took the day off to wait for the shipment. It sounds like UPS normally delivers to you without needing you to be there (called Driver Release) so there’s really no point in being there again. If the shipment was damaged, UPS would’ve seen it as they unloaded the trailer and would have contacted the shipper. Only the shipper–not you–can file a damage claim, so refusing it would do nothing besides cost the shipper more money since they’d have to pay for return shipping.

  36. I ordered some prepper gear as well (eagle nest outfitters doublenest hammock system) gear, and the train was again derailed apparently at Wolf Point MT yesterday 19 July 2012……..what the hell is going on there? they need to figure out what the problem is and fix it once and for all.

  37. I am also in Portland, OR… My package was supposed to arrive today, now it is listed as being an exception due the the derailment… Oh boy… Glad everyone is okay, but now I am stuck wondering if I am ever going to get my stuff…

  38. This is such a funny coincidence, because I’m also expecting a package that would arrive on Saturday if not for a train derailment incident in Wolf Point MT. I read this blog post which is dated in Jan 2012, this is July, now how come do all the trains derail in just Wolf Point MT? Or are we going back to the time when robbers were jumping cargo trains again?

  39. I am in the Seattle area, and have a package that was scheduled for delivery on Monday 7/23. I just checked the status on the UPS website, and see that the status has been changed to train derailement in Wolf Point MT.
I got free shipping on my package, guess I am getting what I paid for 🙂

  40. Dale, the status on my package has been updated as of this morning showing it arrived in Seattle. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is not damaged. I hope you get some news on your shipment soon.
